Most sports drinks focus on one thing: electrolytes, sugar, or caffeine. Rarely, however, do they address what training actually depletes last and what recovers the slowest – the central nervous system.
CNS fatigue is not a myth. It is a measurable phenomenon that manifests as reduced drive, motivation, coordination, and tolerance to painful stimuli. Athletes experiencing CNS fatigue may feel like they are not performing at their best, even though their muscles are physically capable. And what is even more problematic – CNS fatigue does not recover after just one good night of sleep.
Hop Water by Liquid Positive has a specific place in your training protocol. And it is probably not where you would expect.
Muscular Fatigue vs. CNS Fatigue: Two Different Things
Muscular fatigue is peripheral – it takes place directly in the muscle cells. Lactic acid, ATP depletion, microtrauma. It is visible, tangible, and responds well to nutrition, protein, and sleep.
CNS fatigue is central. Neurological. It takes place in the motor cortex, reticular formation, and limbic system. It affects abilities such as maintaining motivation, coordinating movement, and tolerating discomfort. And CNS fatigue cannot be solved simply by getting more sleep.
What does the CNS need? Above all, calm, uninterrupted sleep with sufficient slow-wave sleep, where neural “housekeeping” takes place. For that to happen, the CNS needs to be able to wind down at the right time.
Hops and GABA – A Mechanism Worth Understanding
Hop bitter acids – specifically their metabolite 2-methyl-3-buten-2-ol – can increase GABA receptor activity. GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) is the primary inhibitory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system. When GABA applies the “brakes,” it slows an overactivated CNS and facilitates the transition from wakefulness to sleep.
Franco and colleagues tested this in 2012 in a clinical study involving nurses working night shifts – a group exposed to high levels of CNS strain. After consuming non-alcoholic beer (containing hops), they reported shorter sleep latency and better overall sleep quality.
Key detail: the drink was non-alcoholic. The effect was attributed to hop compounds, not alcohol.
When to Drink Hop Water – and When Not To
Not before training. Reducing CNS activity can negatively affect performance – poorer reactivity, motivation, and drive. Hop Water is not a pre-workout drink. For this purpose, we developed an isotonic version of hop water together with Varga Triathlon Academy and Isadore – designed specifically for use before and during exercise.
The ideal time: 1–2 hours before bed, or immediately after exercise as a “cooldown” drink. Not as your primary source of hydration – there are better tools for that. Instead, think of it as a signal to the CNS: the effort is over, now it is time to recover.
It Is Not a Sedative. It Is a Ritual.
One important clarification: Hop Water will not knock you out or put you to sleep. The effect is subtle – reducing the “buzz” of the nervous system, making it easier to transition into a calmer state, and supporting what your body naturally wants to do after exercise.
That subtlety is precisely its strength. It is a drink that works with your biology, not against it. Make it part of your protocol. Not as a medicine, but as a tool you may not have had before.
