Hops Yeah: Why Hops Belong Beyond Beer

When you hear the word hops, you probably think of beer. Golden foam, a bitter taste, an evening at the pub. It’s an association that has been reinforced thousands of times – and there’s nothing wrong with that.

But hops can do much more.

Humulus lupulus – that’s its botanical name – belongs to the Cannabaceae family, the same plant family as cannabis. It is cultivated in Europe, America, and Asia, grows aggressively upward, and can reach up to six meters in a single season. It is the hop cones – botanically known as strobiles – that contain a wealth of bioactive compounds.

Beer Made It Famous, But Its History Goes Back Much Further

Monastic breweries in medieval Europe may have put hops on the brewing map, but people were working with hops long before they became an essential part of beer recipes. A 2021 systematic review by Borràs and colleagues, published in the renowned journal Planta Medica, examined plants used for anxiety-related sleep disorders. Hops were among the plants with sufficient clinical evidence to be included in the analysis.

Why Does This Matter to Athletes?
